Overview

One of the most widely used tools by professional visualisers across the globe and capable of stunning photorealistic results, V-Ray for Rhino is popular within architecture, interior design, product design, automotive & transport design, jewellery and the visual effects industry. V-Ray's reputation is based on fast raytracing, smooth and accurate GI solutions and physically accurate materials.

V-Ray works inside Rhino3d as a true plug-in and there is no need to to export data. Geometry changes made in Rhino are reflected immediately in V-Ray. Images can be created using either V-Ray RT or the V-Ray Production Renderer.

V-Ray RT allows for images to render constantly in real time, changes to lighting, materials, geometry and camera update immediately. RT can be configured to use ether CPU, GPU Open CL or GPU Nvidia CUDA so that the performance can be optimised to a specific workstation set up. Now in V-Ray 2.0 for Rhino, RT is available as in viewport mode.

The V-Ray Production Renderer allows tailored GI solutions with primary and secondary bounces of indirect illumination being calculated separately to ensure that the most efficient method can be applied to any given scene. These seemingly complex tasks can be controlled simply and effectively with the new preset options in V-Ray 2.0 for Rhino.

The optional V-Ray Express, available as a free download, further simplifies rendering set up. A library of materials, image based lighting, studio lighting and studio floors can be added at the touch of a button.

The V-Ray for Rhino Dome Light simplifies image based lighting and, unlike many other IBL solutions, the bright areas of the HDR image are treated as a true direct light source and correct illumination and contact shadows are created. Using the Dome Light with V-Ray RT is an effective workflow for many situations, including product design, automotive design and jewellery, and is as simple to use as some drag and drop solutions.

The physically accurate Sun and Sky model can utilise either the Rhino Sun, where changes to date and time made in Rhino are immediately updated in V-Ray, or V-Ray's own sunlight model. A range of studio lights are available all of which can be configured by industry standard parameters and IES lights will accurately reproduce manufacturers profiles.

Materials in V-Ray are scientifically accurate and elements such as Reflection, Diffuse Colour and Texture, Transparency, Refraction can be adjusted individually to create incredibly realistic results. The new compact V-Ray material simplifies material creation and a number of special materials are also available such as two-sided, blend, cartoon and the new wrapper material that allows for a matte shadow (shadow catcher) to be created easily.

Rendering huge scenes in V-Ray for Rhino is made easy with a number of memory saving feature including V-Ray Proxies. Geometry from Rhino can be saved as V-Ray Proxy objects which are then loaded dynamically at render time. Proxies are cross-platform objects and can be read by any version of V-Ray.

Distributed rendering is enabled in V-Ray for Rhino as standard rather than as an optional add on. Each single license allows for the processing power of up to ten additional networked machines to be used as distributed render slaves to speed up large renders and the built in batch renderer makes it easy to queue up a number of renders for automatic processing.

V-Ray for Rhino is a complex product and whilst V-Ray Express and preset controls make learning easier many of our customers choose to have training from us either at a scheduled training class or on a bespoke basis.

What really sets V-Ray apart from other visualisation products is the depth of available options across the board, therefore whatever the constraints or complexity of the scene there are always a number of options available to produce the render. V-Ray output can be optimised for post production and separate channels including for example light, reflection, shadow, z depth and alpha can be rendered out simultaneously with the RGB image.

V-Ray RT Interactive Rendering

V-Ray RT (real time) allows the user to design and render simultaneously. The V-Ray RT render window updates continuously reflecting design, material and environment changes as they are made. V-Ray RT can be used both as a self contained render solution or to provide fast, high quality previews before rendering in V-Ray. V-Ray RT can be enabled either in the V-Ray Frame Buffer or in the Rhino Viewport. Choose between CPU or GPU acceleration. 

 

V-Ray Express 

Users can easily access more than 200 materials and interchangeable lighting setups to create realistic studio scenes and illuminate models faster than ever. V-Ray Express is a separate download available at no extra cost for Rhino v5 users.

V-Ray Proxies

V-Ray Proxies (V-Ray Meshes) allow huge scenes to be rendered with minimal RAM requirements. V-Ray Proxy objects are dynamically loaded and unloaded only at render time, saving vital RAM resources. V-Ray for Rhino will create new proxy objects from Rhino geometry and read existing V-Ray Proxies from 3DS Max, Maya etc. See the V-Ray for Rhino Proxies Video for more details.

 

Displacement

Control displacement on a per-material basis and generate detailed geometry at render time with maximum memory efficiency.Water Level feature allows geometry to be excluded beyound a certain specified height. Allows the creation of realistic grilles and perforated materials with three dimensional detail

 

Lights and Illumination 

V-Ray Dome Light

The V-Ray Dome Light provides a simple, artifact-free solution for creating image based lighting. An HDRI image can be loaded into the Dome Light and the brightest part of the image is treated as a direct light resulting in true directional illumination and contact shadows. Great for studio scenes and product shots, the Dome Light can also be used for architectural exteriors.

 

HDR Light Studio Support 

Live connection to HDR Light Studio with Light Paint feature accessed directly within Rhino, providing the most intuitive and creative way to light a design. 

 

IES Light

The IES Light uses photometric data to provide accurate light definition.

 

Sphere Light

Create spherically shaped area lights that have similar controls to the V-Ray rectangular lights.

 

Sun and Sky System

RDK Sun

The V-Ray Sun and Sky system is compatible with the RDK Sun.

 

Sky Options

Control sky properties independently from the sun.

Physically-based Materials

Create materials based on physical properties using V-Ray's versatile shaders.

DR Spawner

Launch Distributed Rendering hosts without opening Rhino.

 

Color Mapping

Clamp Level defines the peak level for clamping bright colors. Adaptation Only uses color-mapping controls for calculations without applying to the final result. Linear Workflow applies inverse gamma correction to all materials, simplifying setup time for Linear Workflow.

 

V-Ray Frame Buffer (VFB)

Region Render specifies a portion of the scene to render. History saves render to the VFB cache, simplifying render comparison. Compare loads two renders directly in the VFB with A/B comparison controls. Material ID supports rendering Material ID channels for post processing.

 

Rhino RDK Support

V-Ray 1.5 for Rhino supports the Rhino Document Sun, Edge Softening, Shutlining, and Displacement.

Basic Specification Requirements:

 Rhino 5 for Windows runs on ordinary Windows desktop and laptop computers, with:

  • 1 GB RAM. 8 GB or more is recommended
  • DVD drive or an Internet connection for installation
  • 600 MB disk space
  • OpenGL 2 capable video card recommended
  • Note: Apple hardware is supported only with Bootcamp

  • Note: Both 32- and 64-bit versions are installed on 64-bit Windows systems.

The V-Ray Express toolbar works only in Rhino 5. It will work either the 32 bit version or the 64-bit version.
