V-Ray for Rhino is a highly accurate renderer for McNeel Rhinoceros, enabling designers to predict and present their designs with the highest level of realism and reduce the need of physical prototypes. V-Ray greatly increases Rhino’s ability to handle large scenes and can be used directly within Grasshopper.

V-Ray Next for Rhino is much more than a do-it-all renderer that creates gorgeous images of your designs. It’s also a full suite of tools to help you accomplish more in Rhino than ever before. V-Ray Next makes it easier to manage everything in your scene — even the crazy complex ones.

V-Ray Next is smart, too. It learns from your scene to make lighting faster. And it can set your camera exposure and white balance automatically. It’s fast. V-Ray Next for Rhino is 50% faster overall. GPU rendering is 2x faster. And it’s up to 7x faster with the new Adaptive Dome Light. V-Ray Next for Rhino extends what is possible in Grasshopper even further - now you can animate  Grasshopper definitions as well as cameras and sunlight, and measure real-world illumination values — all right in Grasshopper.

V-Ray Next for Rhino is compatible with Rhino 5 and Rhino 6. V-Ray for Rhino is supported on Windows only.

Penguin

Penguin 2.0

Penguin brings freehand sketching, watercolour painting and cartoon-like rendering to Rhino.

Penguin is a conceptual, sketch and cartoon, non-photometric scan line renderer. With Penguin you can create stylised images of your models with an artistic look for enhanced graphic and visual appeal.

Penguin has three main styles: technical, ink stroke and cartoon - shown left compared with a Flamingo rendering. The line widths are adjustable and the fill colours can be controlled independently of the material colour.

Penguin runs inside Rhino and has the same system requirements.

KeyShot

KeyShot 7

When looking for a renderer to work with Rhino you may find that KeyShot is the right choice for you.

  • KeyShot is a stand alone rendering application that works alongside Rhino3d
  • KeyShot also directly imports files from a wide range of other modelling applications including Alias, Catia, NX, Pro/Engineer, SOLIDWORKS and Inventor; so if you are looking to render output from more than just Rhino3d then KeyShot may be a good option
  • Originally developed for the automotive industry and popular with industrial designers and engineering designers, KeyShot creates photorealistic visuals with drag and drop simplicity. KeyShot is easy to learn and most users do not require training
  • A KeyShot plugin for Rhino3d allows for 'Live Linking'. This allows changes and refinements to be made to the model in Rhino3d and then sent to KeyShot without losing any previously applied views, materials or textures.
  • KeyShot is currently at version 7. KeyShot 7 brings you more... More ways to create, More Material Possibilities, More Lighting Control and a More Flexible User Interface. Find out about these new features and see if KeyShot 7 is right for you.

_______________________________________________________

Using KeyShot is remarkably straightforward. A real time preview window shows updates as and when you make them. Start by importing the model and applying materials - there are over 700 scientifically accurate materials in the included library. Next choose the lighting from a library of included HDR images and then frame your image just like you would with a real camera. Finally, adjust the background and use either the real time preview image or create an off-line render at a chosen size.

If you'd like to see these features in action then you can watch our Introduction to Rendering with KeyShot & Rhino Video; either by visiting our dedicated KeyShot tutorial page or by watching the video directly below.

If you have any questions regarding KeyShot or you would like to enquire about purchasing a KeyShot license then you can call us on the number at the top of the page or email us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. - we’re always happy to help and would love to hear from you.

_______________________________________________________

Kangaroo

Kangaroo

Kangaroo is a plug-in for Grasshopper, it embeds Physical behaviour directly within your Rhino3d Modelling environment it also allows interaction with the model live while any simulation is running.  With Kangaroo you can participate in a virtual form finding process.

Some examples of where Kangaroo could be applied include:

  1. Planarizing a mesh to create flat rectangular panels for fabrication of flat panels instead of curved ones.
  2. Equalize the edges of a mesh to use the same modules everywhere instead of many different ones
  3. Minimize surface area of a mesh to simulate and create membrane roofs.
  4. Simulate catenary arches to create structurally sound arches and domes
  5. Simulate folds to create origami-like shapes that can expand and contract with flat panels.
  6. Check the impact of gravity on a truss system to visualise deflection.
  7. Check the impact of wind on a building.
  8. Simulate gears to check the mechanics behind an engine
  9. Simulate and Visualize how a panel would bend under pressure
  10. Simulate how objects would configure themselves if packed within a certain area

Forces to be tackled and future development plans include:

  • 2D and 3D Geometric Constraints
  • Mechanical Simulation
  • Breakable Springs
  • Air Resistance
  • Shear
  • And more..

Other Forces can also be added, feel free to forward any suggestions and we’ll put you in touch with the developer, Daniel Piker.

Kangaroo is covered within our Grasshopper Level 2 Scheduled class. We can also include the use of Kangaroo within any tailored or project specific class.  Call us for details.

Flamingo nXt

Flamingo nXt

Flamingo nXt is an easy to use photorealistic rendering solution for Rhino3d, developed by McNeel - the developers of Rhino3d (link) itself.

Flamingo nXt works from within Rhino3d, there is no need to export data and thanks to the streamlined interface it’s possible to get good results within the first few hours of use. Simply assign a preset lighting model, choose an environment, drag and drop materials from the included library and press the render button.

Realistic results are achieved by simulating the way in which real light behaves. Interior and exterior daylight simulations plus HDR image based lighting are all easily enabled via Flamingo nXt presets. Indirect illumination, refraction and complex blurry reflections can also easily be incorporated into the scene.

Flamingo nXt uses progressive path ray tracing - the rendered image refines over a number of passes. Whilst blurry reflections and complex shadows will need quite a few passes to refine, the overall scene can be viewed after one or two passes and, if judged that adjustments to (for example) lighting or materials are needed, the render can be stopped without having to wait for the detailed render to complete.

Flamingo nXt supports network rendering as standard and the processing power of two additional machines can be harnessed to speed up renders. Should more power be required, an unlimited amount of ‘render slaves’ can be added at extra cost.

Interesting features include a 3D tree library useful for architects and urban designers, alpha channel support for post processing and a number of post processing effects including lighting channels, glare, haze and glow.

Network licenses of Flamingo nXt can be shared using the Zoo – the same license manager used for network installations of Rhino3d.

There are software bundles of Rhino3d with Flamingo, this can also include Bongo the keyframe animation plugin and Penguin which simulates an artistic approach to rendering.

Flamingo nXt is competitively priced and there are no annual maintenance or support fees.
